No. 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair
Since the last report all the crown stays have been screwed in and have been knocked over on the outside plus the flexible stays around the base of the diaphragm have been inserted.
The coupling rods on both sides have been fitted and the connecting rods are being cleaned before being put on.
All the brake rigging is in place and the new brake blocks have been mounted on the brake block holders. A new regulator valve body has been machined, by Steve Heckford, who has also machined the new gauge glass bodies.

The pipework, cleaned and annealed, is almost complete and the photograph (left) shows that associated with the RH cylinder block. Oil feeds are from the four Wakefield lubricators sited on the foot plating, which were driven by small levers attached to the expansion links.
The connecting rod from the middle cylinder to the crank axle has now been connected up and work has now stared on the overhaul of the brake gear and the steam sanders prior to reinstatement.

Bulleid Open Wagon No. 12058
Work has continued at a steady pace on Bullied designed wagon 12058. The wagon is now sitting at the end of E road (the maintenance road) in Horsted Keynes shed, giving the team led by Laurie Anderson protection from the weather. Much more paint has been applied to the underframe and on the east side the door pillars have been assembled along with the assembly to hold the hinges. A pair of suitable hinges recovered from an LMS 5 plank wagon have been fitted. On the west side a start has been made on the assembly to hold the hinges.
The next major works will be completing the door hinges and door pillars on both sides and then we need to look at the end stanchions and corners. Then there is just (!) the woodwork.

On the 17th October 1950 Bulleid’s revolutionary “Leader” passes through Winchester on the up main line with a 430 ton test train to Guildford. Nearing the end of its very short life this was perhaps the last glimmer of hope that development of the locomotive would continue. Amongst a shower of sparks and on a heavy train Leader is going well on one of its more successful trips.
